心臓弁の中でも手術の難しい僧帽弁の再建外科の創始者の一人である，心臓弁再建外科の大御所カルペンティエ．本書はカルペンティエみずからが挿図を描きながらまとめた稀有の書である．カルペンティエはフランス人で，幾多の表彰を受けながらパリ病院などで枢要な地位についている．共著者2名はニューヨークの名門マウントサイナイ病院の教授と准教授である．
全編にわたりちりばめられた美麗で写実的な挿図のほとんどがカルペンティエの手によるもので，本書の最大の特徴となっている．基本的な問題を簡潔に扱った第1章，全体の約3分の1のページを占める第2章僧帽弁，さらに第3章三尖弁，第4章大動脈弁と続き，第5章では疾患由来別のさまざまな弁膜症にもかなりのページを割いている．最終章は「知識の伝承」としてごく短く締め括っているが，その中で「人工弁置換に頼らずに弁再建手術を」と述べている．第6章を除く各章の最後に付された質疑応答（Discussion）に手術の奥義の一端を垣間見ることが出来る．
